چکیده

Results from a computational model of arc welding, in which the arc plasma, workpiece and electrode are treated self-consistently, are presented. It is demonstrated through three examples (the effect of shielding gas composition, metal vapour and electrode shape on the weld pool) that reliable prediction of weld pool depth and geometry requires that the arc plasma is included in the computational domain.

Effect of Welding Heat Input on the Intermetallic Compound Layer and Mechanical Properties in Arc Welding-brazing Dissimilar Joining of Aluminum Alloy to Galvanized Steel

The effect of weld heat input on the formation of intermetallic compound (IMCs) layer during arc welding–brazing of aluminium and steel dissimilar alloys, was investigated through both finite element method (FEM) numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The results of FEM analysis as well as welding experiments indicated that increasing weld heat input increases the thickness of IMC...

Sensing of weld pool surface using non-transferred plasma charge sensor

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is the primary process for precision joining of metals due to its capability for accurate control of heat input. As a close relative and modification of GTAW, plasma arc welding (PAW) has higher energy density and can penetrate thicker workpieces while maintaining the desired capability for accurate control of heat input. In order to produce quality welds consist...

Welding Journal - May 2011

Observation of the weld pool provides an effective path to understand and control the welding process. Observation data also attribute to the validation of numerical models, which helps researchers to analyze and evaluate the welding process. Extensive research has been conducted to provide in situ monitoring of the weld pool. The arc sensor was one of the first few sensors that was adopted for...

Heat and mass transfer in gas metal arc welding. Part I: The arc

A unified comprehensive model was developed to simulate the transport phenomena occurring during the gas metal arc welding process. An interactive coupling between arc plasma; melting of the electrode; droplet formation, detachment, transfer, and impingement onto the workpiece; and weld pool dynamics all were considered. Based on the unified model, a thorough investigation of the plasma arc cha...

Modelling of Time-dependent 3D Weld Pool Due to a Moving Arc

Application of a localized heat source is essential in welding process, to minimize size of heat affected zone (HAZ) and hence, reduce unwanted effects such as distortion and residual stresses. Traditionally, in modeling welding phenomena there has been a focus either on the complex fluid and thermo-dynamics local to the weld pool, or on the global thermomechanical behavior of weld structure. A...
